The exhibition New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape was shown in the International Museum of Photography in 1975. The project united nine photographers, who now belong to the stars of the international art scene: Robert Adams, Lewis Baltz, Bernd und Hilla Becher, Joe Deal, Frank Gohlke, Nicholas Nixon, John Schott, Stephen Shore and Henry Wessel jr.
The exhibition’s name is characteristic of a whole movement. The New Topographic Movement has a very strong historical meaning for our culture. It describes the decisive change in the landscape photography: A documentary and civilization-critical point of view is of priority. It examines landscapes that were changed by humankind and influenced by the industrial development in particular.
After Steidl had published a title on the issue last year, now the Landesgalerie in Linz and the SK Stiftung in Cologne have produced a German, a bit slimmer edition to this topic, which accompanied the show through Europe. NEW TOPOGRAPHICS – TEXTE UND REZEPTIONEN provides the rare opportunity to see the exhibition in the historical arrangement with the original works once again. It contains texts by Martin Hochleitner, Gabriele Hofer, Gabriele Conrath-Scholl, William Jenkins, Alison Nordström and Britt Salvesen.
