LYNNE COHEN /// COVER         de | en

For more than thirty years Lynne Cohen has been photographing deserted interiors – laboratories, exercise rooms, waiting rooms, class rooms, foyers … The decors are at times tacky, often funny, only that the humor even intensifies the aspect of suspense and even the one of anxiety.

What is the Christmas tree doing in the corner of the room? Who shall do his laps in this pool, who shall check in into a hotel, which decorates his foyer that way?

These interiors irritate, seem to be artificial, like made-up to become mysterious images. But these rooms exist and therefore raise totally different questions, questions which cannot be answered with the help of these pictures. Who is interested in equipping public places and workplaces so bizarre, so impenetrable? And what kind of interest is that? One can barely imagine people in these interiors , avatars would fit in better.

Or is it due to the pictures themselves? In any case Lynne Cohen does not reveal it, but the title of the book can possibly be understood as a hint. Sense and nonsense, normality and eccentricity meet each other in secrecy, under the surface of the image.
