Countless private pictures are posted in the World Wide Web, on social network sites, in forums and specific interest platforms. In doing so, the senders present themselves and others in very different situations and poses.
With her series SPACE FOR the Berlin artist Ulrike Brückner has picked up this phenomenon. The images, which she has downloaded from the internet for this purpose, depict people, who show themselves in supposed advantageous fashions or presentations, in which pets, infants and children are displayed.
For her series Ulrike Brückner has cut out the characters and pasted them in a computer generated empty space, a space, whose size and materiality cannot be defined. Do we have to imagine the cyberspace that way? The declared will of the senders to reach interested addressees with their visual messages is a contrast to the isolation, which becomes noticeable in this surreal seeming environment.
WINNER, PROFILES, PETS und KIDS, in the end they are categorized – but alone.
Ladies and Gentlemen, we are floating in space.
