I did not intend to introduce this book in the newsletter. Strömholm. The legendary series, I thought, everyone knows it. But in my store I note, however, that many who take the book at hand, see the pictures for the first time. And I notice that the effect of these fabulous photographs is unbroken.
Christer Strömholm has made his pictures of transvestites and transsexuals more than 50 years in the entertainment district of Paris near Place Blanche. For six years he kept returning there, to Jacky and Nana, Suzanne and Sylvia and the others who he affectionately called his ›girlfriends‹.
The book tells about the harsh living in cheap hotels, brothels and on the street. It tells about women who were born in the body of a man. But it is not the otherness that captivates. On the contrary. In pictures, I think, you can not come closer than Strömholm to the tragedy and the beauty, to fragility and discrepancy of human existence. I see the pictures and understand that I am human. Gigantic.
This beautifully designed book is not a reprint of the original edition, but features the complete series and also contains some strong text records. Jacky and Nana tell their story, the publisher Johan Ehrenberg reports on the publication of the first edition and there are also historical records and letters printed facsimile style.
This book is really a godsend. |
