R.I.P. John Pring & SON LTD WIRE 1834 - 2010
Reads like the inscription on a gravestone - and in fact with his book ›The Altogether‹ Chris Coekin has created a worthy memento for a vanishing industrial culture.
Three series he has photographed in the recently closed British factory, where copper cables have been produced for 176 years. Trade union banners were the inspiration for staged portraits of factory workers at work. Close-ups investigate the nature and materiality of surfaces on floors, walls and machines that have evolved over the decades into strange formations. The third series of images presents beautifully aged metal tools photographed swimming in black oil.
The included vinyl single features the tracks ›Days at the Factories‹ and ›CuSO4 Shuffle‹ that mix factory sounds and spoken word.
›The Altogether‹ is a thoughtful look at industrial production conditions hardly to be found over here any more. With hard physical work of course but also the sensuality of process-related impressions and experiences.
The book itself is also the result of great craftsmanship and with the big foil stamp on the cover and many gatefold pages a special tactile experience. |
